  • Inferior function, which operates subconsciously and can be extremely unpredictable. As the opposite force to the dominant function, it can feel foreign and uncomfortable, so it often remains entirely undeveloped. Its influence becomes stronger in times of extreme stress and burnout.

However, Ni can also lead to perfectionism and single-mindedness, which can hold INTJs back from reaching their full potential. They might be reluctant to take advice, believing that their insights are superior, while simultaneously struggling to achieve the perfect results they’ve envisioned.

#2. Extraverted Thinking (Te): The Efficient Organizer

INTJs’ auxiliary function, extraverted thinking (Te), balances out dominant Ni and organizes the information it collects for further use. As an extraverted function, it also bridges the gap between INTJs and the outside world, making sure they don’t remain overly stuck in their heads.

Te is a very rigid function that relies exclusively on facts and statistics, which is useful in professional settings, but less so in personal ones. Those stuck in a Ni-Fi loop tend to become more closed off and prone to using Fi to morally justify their actions, even if there’s no basis for it. In a way, they twist Fi’s normal functioning to suit their own agenda, which helps them excuse all their behaviours, no matter how wrong.

#4. Extraverted Sensing (Se): The Hidden Observer

Extraverted sensing (Se) is INTJs’ inferior function that is largely suppressed and acts subconsciously. Its influence is best felt in stressful situations, when dominant Ni’s control falters and gives way to less developed functions.

When properly developed, Se is a function of spontaneity, observation, and living in the moment, but it doesn’t manifest that way in INTJs. Instead, it may make them hasty and short-sighted, which is very uncharacteristic for these cautious personalities.

For example, INTJs in the grip of their inferior Se might overindulge in sensory experiences, suddenly determined to have fun at any cost. They distract themselves from the source of their stress, hoping that acting the opposite of how they normally do would help them feel better.

Of course, this rarely works, and behaving so out of character usually only worsens their stress and anxiety. In general, the solution lies in balancing the dominant and auxiliary functions, not giving free rein to the inferior one.

That doesn’t mean INTJs should completely neglect their Se; it can help them connect to the outside world the way no other function in their stack does. It’s important to develop it carefully, though, and never let it take over entirely.
